Coups

Portentum: Africa Reborn

Much of the exposure that deals with the African infrastructures are based on the power grip of warlords and corrupt government officials. A key element to these wresting powers is through what is known as a coup. More specifically the coup d'état, which more or less means to overthrow or gain an advantage of a state usually one nation or entity over another, is the method that many dictators choose to gain authority.

However in order for a faction to gain the advantage of dictatorship or rule over a territory they must first build an alliance. Many rebellious factions that seek to usurp powers are generally many different smaller cells that unite and combine for a common effort to evoke their agenda throughout the rest of whichever region they base their operations in. Leaders in each group tend to base their ranking on manipulation of government officials, successful campaigns against government propaganda, willingness to sacrifice their soldiers and even taking the lives of competition.

In order for groups to gain a strangle-hold of a people they must find a way to drive the current administrations out of power. Usually this means to attack the infrastructure of the weakest rulers in the least known areas that will not be prone to larger governmental retaliations. Once this task, which is a dangerous and can normally result in failure, is complete then the reorganization of the new power structure is appointed by the commander, which in turn is likely the orchestrating individual(s) of the coup, and positions are strategically created to analyze and prepare for the overthrow of the next entity. Key positions are reserved for some that are part of the old regime as they helped the new ruling party secure the authority.

Any power that rules over a people will promulgate a tenet to tactically draw the people closer to its aims. Ideologies or belief systems are attacked forcing people to either embrace the new perceptions or force those that would stand against it to be killed or forced out and become an unacceptable lot. Those that stay and receive the new ideas are absorbed into the new army and become soldiers for the movement. Those that are against it are now more than likely ostracized by all municipalities simply because they come from the area that has been overthrown and have no place amongst the people.

Refugees that are expelled from their homes become vagabonds that resort to what they did not wish to become, thieves, looters, and even murderers.

Where many despots gain their power, they may eventually be usurped themselves as new factions that wish to have their own power seek and destroy those that have conquered in such a fashion. Thus, the cycle of dictatorship.
